EN: Fifteen minute walk in Alexanderplatz, Berlin
After arriving in Berlin and thinking of a place where I could have dinner, I went to Alexanderplatz: one of the best-known and probably largest squares in Berlin. It has been used as a stage for the recording of scenes from several films, including "Good Bye Lenin" and "The Bourne Supremacy". From major shopping to the famous TV Tower (Fernsehturm), which at 368 meters is one of the tallest buildings in Europe. A fifteen minute walk was enough to see another reality that lives there! Although Germany is one of the biggest powers in the world, an exorbitant number of homeless people live on the streets of the city. I registered at least a dozen people who use this square as temporary residence. I talked to one of the guys I met, Ian, 19, a native German who lived on the streets because he could not find work. He told me that many of the people who live on the streets come from Poland because of the precarious conditions which they were in and that they are moving here to look for something better. I offered him a meal and in the end we talked whilst smoking a cigarette.
