Entrudo Chocalheiro 2025 | Caretos de Podence, Portugal.
The Caretos de Podence are a fascinating and vibrant tradition from the village of Podence in northern Portugal. These masked figures, dressed in colorful woolen costumes with fringes and wearing brass or leather masks, are a central part of the "Entrudo Chocalheiro" (Shrovetide Carnival). The Caretos are known for their playful and mischievous behavior, running through the streets, ringing cowbells, and interacting with the crowd in a lively celebration.
Mural Dedication to Pope Francis: A special mural was inaugurated to honor Pope Francis, following a gesture where the Caretos gifted him a traditional coat earlier this year.
The "Caretos" carnival of Podence is a social practice associated with the end of winter and the arrival of spring. The festivities take place over four days on the streets and houses of neighbors of the village, who visit each other.
