CARETOS DE PODENCE 2025

Revelers in vibrant traditional costumes participate in the annual Carnival festivities in Podence, Portugal. Wearing colourful wool costumes and brass or wooden masks, they animate the streets of Podence, a village in the municipality of Macedo de Cavaleiros, Portugal. With their shouts and playful pursuits, particularly targeting single women, the Caretos create a mischievous yet festive atmosphere. This cultural tradition, recognised as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO in December 2019, highlights the rich heritage of the region.
