O My Traveling Box ganhou uma nova casa no meu site — uma landing page dedicada exclusivamente ao projeto. Depois de tantos quilómetros, encontros e retratos feitos na estrada, senti que a caixa merecia um espaço próprio, onde a sua história pudesse respirar. A nova página reúne a essência do projeto: o estúdio portátil que viaja comigo, os retratos feitos no momento e as pessoas que encontro pelo caminho. É um ponto de partida para quem quer perceber como a caixa funciona, de onde vem esta tradição e porque continuo a levá‑la comigo em cada viagem. Este é um projeto vivo, em constante movimento, e esta página é mais um passo para o organizar, partilhar e abrir ainda mais o arquivo de viajantes que tenho vindo a construir. Inside that small space, travelers pause for a moment, step out of the landscape, and let themselves be seen. Where the Two Projects Meet When I travel, the box comes with me. It becomes a bridge between strangers, a place where stories are exchanged and portraits are made. Every encounter adds another layer to the archive—faces, gestures, friendships, and fleeting connections that only happen on the road. Together, these two projects form a single body of work: a moving portrait of contemporary travel culture, told through the people who live it. Esta série de imagens apresenta alguns desses profissionais que marcaram presença no evento musical. O fotógrafo Diogo Baptista esteve presente no rio Taboão durante os dias do festival onde aproveitou para retratar os colegas de trabalho e ainda alguns festivaleiros que, curiosamente, viam a câmara afegã. Este dispositivo, que funciona através de processos analógicos, presenteava as pessoas com uma recordação em papel no próprio local do “Couraíso”. A câmara afegã é uma maneira antiga de fotografar, originária do Afeganistão: um método que está relacionado com a fotografia “à lá minuta” e que também era popular em Portugal nos anos 50. O projeto de Diogo Baptista, The Box, que integra a exposição, RAVE/Projeto 19, ainda está patente no Centro Português de Fotografia até 20 de outubro. EN
Photographers photographed at the festival, Paredes de Coura, 2019. The series of images represents people that were at the festival. The photographer, Diogo Baptista, spent his days on the banks of Taboão River where he took the opportunity to capture his co-workers and some festival-goers who were curious about the Afghan box. A camera that gives people a paper souvenir, thanks to the analogue process, taken right in the heart of "couraíso". The Afghan camera is an old way of photographing originating in Afghanistan and is related to “à lá minuta” photography, which was popular in Portugal in the 1950s. Diogo Baptista's project, The Box, which is part of the exhibition, RAVE / Project 19, still present at the Portuguese Institute of Photography until October 20th. A Caixa | The Box(PT) A fotografia de retrato através de uma “Afghan Box Camera” (kamra-e-faoree) é típica dos fotógrafos de rua do Afeganistão. É uma câmara utilizada por fotógrafos ambulantes, que exercem a sua atividade em espaços públicos. Neste ensaio, a câmara afegã é o assunto principal e é utilizada de forma performativa, ao permanecer diante das pessoas enquanto é feito o retrato desejado. Este processo é um retorno ao analógico e a uma relação não imediatista com a fotografia, uma relação que não receia e que até acolhe o erro. (EN) Portrait photography through an Afghan Box Camera (kamra-e-faoree) is typical of Afghan street photographers. This camera is used by traveling photographers, who work in public spaces. In this essay, the Afghan Chamber is the main subject and is used in a performative way by standing in front of the people while the desired picture is taken. This process is a return to the analog and to a “slower” relation with photography, a relation that does not fear imperfections, it embraces them.
